The Mexican Children’s Refuge is a scholarship program provided by another Valley organization and its activities and support are encouraged by Mabel’s Free Clinic Association.
Mexican Children’s Refuge is an independent scholarship program for children in grades 7 and above, in high school and in college. The Mexican Children’s Refuge program provides funds to reimburse students who have paid their tuition and can show successful report cards, and provides limited school bus transportation for students who would otherwise be unable to attend school. We applaud and support the efforts of this organization.
Mexican Children’s Refuge has had to turn several students away because there were insufficient funds from sponsors. Mexican Children’s Refuge is strict with the requirements and qualifications for a student to deserve a sponsor. To enter the program, they must fill out an application which requires information about their family, their financial status, a copy of their report card, a picture ID from the school, and a copy of the parents water and/or electric bill (this verifies their residency). From this information Mexican Children’s Refuge selects the students for sponsorship.
After they enter the program and are eligible for help, we ask for a current report card, picture ID, and a letter to their sponsor when they come for their scholarship money. Their letter and report card is mailed to their sponsor. We are also trying to get pictures of all the students to their sponsor.
Mexican Children’s Refuge expects a 7.5 grade point average out of a possible 10 to continue receiving money. If the grade point average is less than that, we work with the student to bring about improvement. It is always up to the sponsor to decide continuing sponsorship of his child. We encourage sponsors to send a picture and/or letter and we will see that your student gets them. We try to assign students who we think will stay in school, but due to family situations, students drop out.
There are no government regulations as far as a student attending school in Mexico. Any student in school after grade 6 must pay tuition to continue, which is often a financial burden too great for the family to endure.
